Split, Croatia is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Stunning architecture, incredible sunsets, and at least a dozen beaches make Split one of my favorite places I’ve visited so far.
Croatia can be more expensive than some other Balkan destinations like Mostar and Kotor. But luckily there are plenty of free things to see and do in Split.
These are my favorite free things to do in Split, including the 3 best places to watch the sunset in Split.
1. Walk along the Split Riva.
The Riva is the area along the waterfront in front of Diocletian’s Palace. The walkway is lined with flowers and palm trees. There are lots of shops and restaurants here. You can also take your picture with the Split sign.
This is a main hub where you can buy boat tours to other islands and other day trips from Split. You’ll also walk through Riva to get to the ferry or train station. It’s one of the nicest walks I’ve had from the train station to my Airbnb. The view at night is lovely as well.
2. Explore Diocletian’s Palace.
Diocletian’s Palace was built for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the 4th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in the region. The palace has been repurposed into shops, bars, restaurants, and apartments.
The stone walls lining every cafe and store give Split a unique ambiance and add another layer of charm to the city.
You should also walk through the palace at night, when the lights make it especially beautiful.
3. Rub Gregory of Nin’s big toe for luck.
Just outside the palace is a statue of Gregory of Nin. It’s believed that rubbing his toe will grant your wish or bring you good luck. You’ll notice the toe is a different color than the rest of the statue from years of being touched by people.
4. See the Croatian National Theater in Split.
If you travel down Croatia you’ll notice more Austrian architecture in the north and Roman architecture in the south. Split has both. I thought it was really cool to see them next to each other. The Croatia National Theater is one of the more prominent buildings with Austrian architecture and is located in the center right by the palace.
5. Go to a different beach every day.
There are many beautiful beaches along Split’s coast on the Adriatic Sea. The pebble beaches on the southern coast of the peninsula can get very crowded. Most of the beaches in this area have bars, play music, and have more of a party vibe. The beaches in Marjan park are quieter and more secluded.
I stayed in Split for 2 weeks and went to a different beach almost every day.
6. Go snorkeling.
The Adriatic coast is full of great snorkeling spots. My favorite place to go snorkeling in Split was along the northern coast of Marjan park. These beaches have rocks and cliffs instead of tiny pebbles. The rock formations are great hiding places for fish and other sea creatures.
If you like snorkeling and free diving, you should also visit Budva, where I saw even more fish.
7. Watch the sunset from Telegrin Peak.
The hike to Telegrin Peak is the most beautiful hike I’ve ever done in my life. The trail circles around Marjan park giving you gorgeous views of the city and the mountains across the water. It can be a little challenging so be sure to bring water.
8. See the city from the Marjan Viewpoint.
This viewpoint is at the beginning of the trail to Telegrin Peak, just after the Marjan Stairs. It’s a much shorter walk than Telegrin Peak and gives you a great view of Split. I recommend going at night to see the lights.
9. Watch the sunset while you swim at Kasjuni beach.
Kasjuni beach is near the end of Marjan park on the southern side. This beach has a different vibe than the others because of the surrounding cliffs and forest. It’s also the only beach in Split that faces west, making it perfect for the sunset.
10. See the sunset from Sustipan park.
Sustipan is the closest sunset spot to the center of Split. This small park overlooks the sea from a high cliff. It would be a good spot to have a picnic while you watch the sunset. Sustipan also touches Zvončac park, where a lot of festivals are held.
